High School Course Prerequisites: OnRamps Chemistry I + Lab, AP Chemistry or equivalent

Analyze and identify unknowns while using modern chemistry instruments along the way. 

Principles of Chemistry II continues the development and application of concepts, theories and laws introduced in Chemistry I and extends the study of thermodynamics. The lab component focuses on analytical laboratory techniques, modern chemistry instrumentation and experimental protocols.  

Students deepen chemistry knowledge through experiments, group work and simulations that explore chemical equilibria, kinetics, water, and nuclear chemistry and electrochemistry.  

Course Structure

Through Flipped Learning, students build on what they learned in Principles of Chemistry I (or an equivalent prior college chemistry course). They continue to develop their laboratory and analytical skills. 

Big Ideas

  • Equilibria: phase changes of pure substances and mixtures; different types of equilibria and the conditions under which these reactions occur 
  • Water chemistry: chemistry of acid-base reactions and equilibria; quantify acids and bases in solutions using the relationship of the ever-present proton (H+) and hydroxide ion (OH–) 
  • Electrochemistry: how energy locked up inside chemicals can be released in a controlled manner; learn how we tap into that energy via electrochemical cells 
  • Kinetics: map progress of the reaction to a time scale, study catalysts such as enzymes 
  • Chemistry in the modern world: the role and reactions of polymers and biopolymers; how chemical changes and their accompanying energy transformations are important to our everyday world; common industrial chemical reactions in manufacturing processes; nuclear and organic chemistry
